What Are Xtream Codes? A Plain English Explanation

When you sign up for IPTV, your provider sends you credentials to connect your player app to the channel servers. There are two main formats: M3U playlists and Xtream Codes API. Most UK IPTV providers — including IPTV UK Elite — offer both, but Xtream Codes is the superior choice for most users.

Xtream Codes vs M3U: What's the Difference?

M3U playlist: A single long URL that, when loaded, downloads a text file containing all of your channels. The file can be 2–5 MB for large channel lists and takes 30–60 seconds to load every time the app starts.

Xtream Codes API: Three separate credentials — a Server URL, a Username, and a Password. The app connects to the server and only downloads the information it needs. Initial load is much faster (5–15 seconds), and the server maintains a live connection rather than a static file.

The Key Advantages of Xtream Codes

1. Faster initial load

On a BT or Virgin Media connection, Xtream Codes loads channel metadata in under 15 seconds. M3U on a 45,000-channel list can take 60+ seconds.

2. Automatic categories

Xtream Codes sends category information alongside channel URLs. TiviMate and IPTV Smarters display "Sky Sports", "BBC & ITV", "International", "Series", "Movies" as separate folders automatically — without you having to organise anything.

3. 7-day catch-up / rewind support

The catch-up function (rewind live TV up to 7 days) only works via Xtream Codes. This is the feature that lets you rewind last night's Premier League match without it being in the VOD library. M3U connections do not support catch-up.

4. VOD browsing with metadata

Xtream Codes sends film titles, descriptions, poster artwork, year, and genre for all VOD content. In TiviMate, this means the video library looks like Netflix — with cover art, ratings, and descriptions. M3U playlists just show a list of URLs.

5. Account expiry management

Your app can check your subscription end date via Xtream Codes. TiviMate displays your expiry date in the settings panel, so you always know when to renew.

How to Use Xtream Codes on a Firestick

Whichever IPTV app you use, the process is the same:

In TiviMate:

  1. Open TiviMate > tap the Settings gear icon > Playlists > Add Playlist
  2. Select Xtream Codes
  3. Enter the Server URL (e.g. http://yourserver.com:8080)
  4. Enter your Username and Password
  5. Tap Next — TiviMate connects and downloads your channel list

In IPTV Smarters Pro:

  1. Open the app > Add User > Login with Xtream Codes API
  2. Enter a profile name (e.g. "IPTV UK Elite")
  3. Enter the Username, Password, and Server URL
  4. Tap Add User — the app logs in and populates categories

Troubleshooting: Login Failed

If you get a "Login Failed" or "Invalid Credentials" error:

  1. Check for typos: Copy-paste credentials from WhatsApp if possible — do not retype them. The username and password are case-sensitive. A lowercase "l" and an uppercase "I" look identical in most fonts.
  2. Check the server URL format: It should begin with `http://` not `https://`. The port number (e.g. :8080 or :25461) must be included exactly as provided.
  3. Check BT Web Protect: If you are on BT Broadband, BT Web Protect may be blocking the server URL. Disable it via My BT account settings.
  4. Check your subscription: If your subscription expired, credentials will show as invalid. Message IPTV UK Elite on WhatsApp to check or renew.
